Ocean Thermal Energy, Bitcoin Mining, and AI Data Centers:

This episode explores Ocean Bit, a startup tackling energy scarcity and data scarcity by developing offshore renewable energy power plants with collocated data centers. Using Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), they pump cold deep water (900–1,000m at 4.5°C) to interact with warm surface water near the equator (20°N–20°S). This generates baseload renewable power while reusing waste water for data center cooling, cutting costs for Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia.

Though theorized in the early 1900s, OTEC stalled until advances in the oil and gas industry lowered costs of pumps and turbines. Now, the AI boom and surging demand for compute infrastructure create new incentives. Ocean Bit bitcoin mining technology integrates proven energy systems with data centers to meet global demand for AI model training, cloud hosting, and storage without land or water constraints.

The discussion highlights Bitcoin mining as a flexible tool to monetize stranded energy, stabilize grids, and generate early revenue. From flare gas mining in the U.S. to hydro projects in South Africa, Bitcoin enables renewable projects to bridge gaps until traditional customers arrive. Paired with demand response markets like Texas, OTEC vessels can supply grids or Bitcoin miners, maximizing efficiency.
