In Ep. 03 of the Jake Woodhouse Podcast, James Check and I explore why engineers grasp Bitcoin and finance faster than most, how global liquidity is impacting Bitcoin’s current price, how on-chain analysis can be useful in predicting Bitcoin’s price movements, and what to expect from Bitcoin over the next 12 months. James Check is an ex-civil engineer, turned Bitcoin analyst after falling down the onchain analysis rabbit hole. James co-founded “CheckOnChain”, and previously built and led the analyst team at Glassnode.

In this episode, James Check shares his evolution from civil engineer to leading on-chain Bitcoin analyst and founder of the “Check On Chain” Substack. Starting with a background in underground infrastructure, James discovered Bitcoin in 2017 at the top of the bull market, lost money, and used the experience to dive deeper into human market behavior. His engineering mindset and systems thinking made him a natural fit for analyzing Bitcoin through on-chain data, which allows analysts to see the movement and behavior of coins across time and cohort groups. This led to a career at Glassnode and eventually founding his own Bitcoin-focused business to educate and empower long-term holders.

James explains how on-chain metrics like cost basis, profit/loss realization, and coin age distribution can map emotional market phases such as euphoria and capitulation. He argues that Bitcoin is unique in being a transparent monetary system where emotion is measurable through the blockchain. With insights into who is buying, who is selling, and at what profit or loss, James has developed a framework to identify periods of market exhaustion and accumulation. For example, historical sell-offs occur when long-term holders see life-changing profits, while deep corrections show the final capitulation of late entrants. This behavioral data gives HODLers an edge in understanding volatility and preparing for both corrections and new highs.

Looking ahead to late 2024 and 2025, James sees $120K–$150K as a potential “topping cloud” where seasoned holders may begin distributing coins. With Bitcoin now solidly over the $1 trillion market cap and institutional demand through ETFs surging (e.g., BlackRock’s $50B inflows), he believes the asset has entered a new phase of stability. Drawdowns below $60K are increasingly unlikely, and Bitcoin’s current price movements reflect growing global liquidity and macroeconomic shifts. James continues to educate through his Substack, CheckOnChain, where he blends objective data analysis with the perspective of a committed hodler, giving his audience practical insights without hype.
